Broad and Interconnected Themes Mark the Discussions of the 6th Day of COP28

The 6th day of COP28 was focused on addressing issues and solutions related to Energy and Industry, Just Transition, and Indigenous Peoples.

These essential themes remained at the center of the discussions this Tuesday, December 5th, reflecting the comprehensive approach adopted to tackle global climate challenges.

Each event, debate, and discussion of the day revolved around reflections like:

What actions should be taken in industry and the energy sector, seeking strategies for emission reduction and more sustainable practices?

How to highlight the importance of indigenous peoples in global diplomacy, ensuring that their voices have more influence on climate-related decisions?

How to ensure a just transition, guaranteeing access to climate finance for those who need it most?

Stay tuned for the highlights of the 6th day of COP28, the United Nations (UN) Conference on Climate Change, held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

6th Day of COP28: Call for More Adherence to the Charter for the Decarbonization of Oil and Gas

This Tuesday, December 5th, during the morning session of COP28, the president of the Oil and Gas Climate Initiative (OGCI), Bjørn Otto Sverdrup, made an appeal calling for adherence to the “Charter for the Decarbonization of Oil and Gas”.

On December 2nd, 50 oil and gas companies had signed this document. Together, they represent more than 40% of global oil production, but this number is still insufficient.

The Minister of Energy and Infrastructure of the United Arab Emirates, Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, requested that more companies join this objective.

“We need inclusion, we need to continue working, 50 companies are not enough, we need all producers involved.”

Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei

(Minister of Energy and Infrastructure of the United Arab Emirates)

The intention is to accelerate climate action in the industry, with ambitious targets, including net-zero emissions by 2050.

The initiative is part of the “Global Decarbonization Accelerator” (GDA), presented by the president of COP28, which focuses on expanding the future energy system, decarbonizing the current system, and covering greenhouse gases beyond CO2.

The “Decarbonization Charter” is an incentive for sector companies to adhere to more sustainable practices.

In addition, 116 countries have signed the “Global Commitment to Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency,” aiming to double the global capacity for renewable energy by 2030 and annually improve global energy efficiency.

Brazil Pavilion: Minas Day

At the Brazil Pavilion, the Minas Day, held on this 6th day of COP28, sought joint solutions between the government and the private sector to face the challenges and impacts resulting from climate change.

This day dedicated to the State of Minas Gerais brought together government authorities, representatives of the CNI, Minas Gerais Industry Association,FIEMG, CEMIG, BDMG , and various companies.

Minas Gerais Government Launches Unprecedented Greenhouse Gas Emissions Monitoring Tool

On this Tuesday, December 5, the government of Minas Gerais launched an unprecedented tool for monitoring greenhouse gas emissions.

With this, Minas Gerais became the first Brazilian state to develop mechanisms for the implementation of the Climate Action Plan, through the Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) Climate methodology.

This is a tool for monitoring the implementation of actions foreseen in the climate action plan of Minas Gerais.

Funded by UK PACT, it helps account for emission reduction and increased capture. In addition to supporting the management of the climate action plan, it is an important means of transparency, clearly informing society about the progress and commitments undertaken.

New Investments in the State for Mitigation Actions

On Minas Day, a new investment in Minas was also announced, establishing a partnership with Harsco Metals Ltda to promote the circular economy in the state.

The initiative includes the expansion of the industrial unit for collecting steel slag directly from the furnaces of the main steel producers in Minas Gerais.

With an investment of R$220 million, from Invest Minas, the project, located in Timóteo, in the Vale do Rio Doce, is expected to generate 760 direct jobs.

Success Stories: MG Presents 57 Examples of Confronting the Climate Crisis

During Minas Day, practical actions of the government and the productive sector were also presented involving industry, as well as agriculture and planted forests, aiming at decarbonizing the economy.

In other words, there are several successful examples of activities, projects, and programs developed in favor of Sustainability in the State of Minas Gerais.

  • The portfolio “Success Stories of Minas Gerais 2023” encompasses 9 thematic blocks:
  • Climate Action Plan 2050;
  • Solar Energy: Sol do Cerrado project;
  • Conservation;
  • Water Resources;
  • Industry;
  • Agriculture, Livestock and Planted Forest;
  • Sustainable Development;
  • Climate Financing;
  • Opportunities.

The presented success stories result from an integrated engagement to fulfill the state’s ‘Race to Zero’ commitment.

Mateus Simões, Vice Governor of Minas Gerais

“It is no coincidence that Minas was recognized, during the UN’s climate action week, as the state that has made the most progress in presenting what the climate action plans for the future are. We joined the Race to Zero, we put together an inventory and now a climate action plan in which agriculture and industry are on our side, saying what they will do, how they will do it, and in how much time, so that we guarantee carbon emission neutrality by 2050”.

Mateus Simões

(Vice Governor of Minas Gerais)

Germano Bremm, Secretary of Urban Planning, Environment and Sustainability of Porto Alegre

“We live an extreme reality in Porto Alegre due to climate change. In partnership with ICLEI, still in 2021, we made an inventory of greenhouse gases. We also started the city’s Climate Action Plan, which is underway. Today, we deliver the Risk and Vulnerability Study of the city and its water footprint: the water consumption of the city of Porto Alegre”.

Germano Bremm

(Secretary of Urban Planning, Environment and Sustainability of Porto Alegre)

Marcelo Souza Silva, President of Sebrae MG and CDL-BH

“We are here at COP28 to learn about macro actions within decarbonization, and we also came to demonstrate some actions that SEBRAE Minas is already doing. In addition, we are also making connections, learning about other actions carried out around the world, that we can apply to micro and small entrepreneurs in Minas Gerais”.

Marcelo Souza Silva

(President of Sebrae MG and CDL-BH)

Today, our directors also had the opportunity to talk with the secretary of the State Secretariat for Environment and Sustainable Development MG,
